How Much Does a Japanese Tattoo Cost in Sydney? A Straight Answer

Let me be straight with you from the start: most artists dodge this question. You ask what a sleeve costs and you get “depends on the piece.” True — and useless. So here’s the honest version.

Large-scale Japanese work is priced by time, not by the piece. In Sydney, established artists charge roughly $200–$350 an hour, or a day rate for full day sessions, that’s how I charge, full and Half day sessions. A full sleeve with chest plate is typically 30–60 hours over 3-6 months. A back piece is a bigger journey again. A bodysuit is measured in years, not months. There’s no way to dress that up, and I’m not going to try.

Now the part nobody says out loud: nobody pays for it in one hit. You pay per session, as you go. One of my clients put it better than I ever could — “it’s like a mortgage, I save money aside every week and its just part of my monthly budget” Another one: “I equate it to value rather than dollars.” These are working people — tradies, nurses, truck drivers. They didn’t have the money sitting in a drawer. They had a plan and made it work.

And here’s what thirty years in the chair has taught me about the cheap option. A cheap tattoo is the most expensive thing you’ll ever buy. You’ll pay for it once when it’s done, again when you stop wearing short sleeves,  a third time when you’re getting lasered and a fourth when you’re in my chair asking about a cover-up. Buy once, cry once. Good boots that last twenty years beat three pairs of cheap ones — and boots aren’t on your skin until your last breath.

The real question isn’t “how much does it cost?” It’s “what am I getting for it?” Work that still holds its lines when you’re seventy. A piece with four hundred years of tradition behind it, built for your body, done properly. ‘Pick artists, not prices’ — a client of mine said that too, and he’s right.

If money’s genuinely tight — I’ve been there — the answer isn’t a cheaper artist or a flight to get it done in one day overseas . It’s a slower plan, a session every 4-6 weeks instead of two, half day sessions instead of full day sessions. Take your time, save as you go, start when you’re ready, but start, life doesn’t get any easier or cheaper as time goes on. If you want it you can make it happen.
