Things you should NOT do after a tattoo - Authent/Ink

You’ve probably heard a thousand times on what the best methods of healing are. Use this cream, use this product, etc… When it comes to what you should do it’s pretty divisive. What’s pretty universal are these 4 things:

1. Do NOT expose your tattoo to the sun

Once the needle hits your skin, the sun will become your enemy. Exposing your tattoo to UV rays will result in the ink fading, especially when the tattoo is fresh/still healing.

Solution: Stay out of the sun (duh), but if it’s unavoidable then make sure you cover your tattoo with loose fitting clothing and stay in the shade when you can.

2. Do NOT scratch your tattoo during the healing stage

What’s more painful than getting tattooed? Resisting the itch that comes with healing said tattoo. Once you get a couple days into healing a tattoo, you move from physical pain to mental pain as the call of the itch compels you.

Scratching a fresh tattoo is a big no-no because it will lift the ink, scar your skin, and/or could lead to infection if you have debris under your nails. 0/10 would not recommend.

Solution: Once you get to 2-3 days of healing you can put a small amount of moisturiser on  your tattoo. Don’t lather it because can lead to infection. We recommend Vaseline Deep Restore, just in small amounts.

3. Do NOT listen to armchair experts

Having friends and the internet is a great thing but when it comes to healing tattoos: respectfully, don’t listen to them. The only person you should be listening to is the person who did your tattoo.

4. Do NOT forget about hygiene

When you walk out the doors of a tattoo shop, it becomes YOUR responsibility to take care of your tattoo. It is on you forever, remember? A poorly healed tattoo reflects poorly on both you and your artist.
