As relieving as it is to finally finish off a large-scale project, to get that final shot of the concept-turned-tattoo in it’s whole, final form, it’s my personal opinion that the journey to that point is equally as exciting. To stencil a new section each appointment or hype yourself up to manage the pain, to see each section gradually filled in with colour or shading-to know that there’s only one, two, three sessions left to go and see the art come to life across your skin-that feeling is nothing short of incredible. We don’t give enough credit to the clients who sit through those long sessions. That’s why this post is a collection of ongoing and completed tattoos, with a focus on back pieces. We’ve got a range of styles from a few different artists-have a peek!
Horisumi started this warrior back piece a month ago, and at this stage he’s just finished up the line work for the main motifs. Next up is the line work for the background, then off to shading! We’re keen to see progress on this one in the coming months.
This project took close to two years to complete-after the first few sessions, they took an extended break till the client was ready to proceed. We were all pretty stoked when he came in for the first session after the break. Finally, some progress could be made! Four sessions later, and this classic b&g hanya and dragon back piece was completed. Excuse the difference in lighting, the final image was taken in the evening after a long, long day of tattooing. Props to this client for sitting through it!
This incredible tiger back piece has just one session left to go. All that’s left is to fill in background on the lower right buttock. This client has come in for numerous back-to-back sessions, and has had each section meticulously stencilled on him each time. Stay tuned for completed pictures in the months to come!
After completing a full leg sleeve on this tough-as-nails client, Horivida has had the honour of bringing this Alien themed back piece to life. We don’t have any progress pictures of this one, unfortunately, but this project was several long sessions in the making. Thanks to Joshua for coming through!
Two phoenix’s and a smattering of sakura’s decorate the length of this client’s back, symbolising his two twin daughters. This piece is particularly special-not only is it a first tattoo, but the client in question started his tattooing journey with the intention of celebrating his 60th birthday. As far as birthday gifts go, we’d say this one takes the cake! All around, this client is a superstar, having made numerous trips from Perth to stop by our humble little shop. The next session is in May, and it can’t come quickly enough!
Last up, we have two tattoos done by Kai. The first is an ongoing project that has taken shape over the past few week. Two sessions ago, Kai added a splash of red to each individual scale down the dragon’s body, and this past session he balanced it out with various shades of grey. It’s turning out to be a stunning, eye-catching piece, but it’ll be another month till we see some progress.
Continuing the dragon theme, we have a back piece featuring two dragons beneath a full moon. Various elements work together in this piece, creating a feast for the eyes.
Large scale back tattoos are always an honour and challenge to take on. It’s not easy to lie on your front all day and let someone stab you repeatedly, and it takes a lot of trust to be in that position at all. This is just a small collection of all the incredible clients we have undertaking such pieces, and we hope to endeavour to take on more in the future!
